The smooth aluminum case of your iPad is just begging for a laser engraving. The laser etches the aluminum surface leaving a shiny area that contrasts well with the brushed aluminum. It can appear lighter or darker than the iPad itself depending on the environmental light. View the other images in the gallery to see examples.

Blue polyurethane Smart Covers are very popular.

iPad Smart Covers are decorated in-house using our laser engraving machine. In this process the laser melts or removes the top surface of material. It is not printing and no color is added. There is usually some variation in the color and appearance of each cover. If you need to order a large number of covers that all look identical then this is not the decoration process to use. Debossed and printed iPad cases may be a better choice for your needs.

The current light gray polyurethane smart cover for iPad sold by Apple laser engraves to a light gray. There is very little color change or contrast. The result is a very subtle engraved mark. The inside of a polyurethane Smart Cover engraves much nicer than the outside. We can engrave photographs and artwork with shading on the inside of your poly cover.

If you are ordering multiple covers we very strongly recommend doing one as a sample first, receiving it in person, and adjusting your artwork as needed. This process generally takes about two weeks, but quick turnaround orders are possible by taking advantage of our rush service options. We do not recommend ordering a large number of covers without an in-person proof. Returns or refunds are not possible for custom items.

Be sure to also read our Smart Cover F.A.Q. below.

The dark gray polyurethane smart cover for iPad was released by Apple in late 2011. These engrave the best of any of the poly covers. The engraving results in a shiny, somewhat textured, shade of gray that is darker than the original color of the cover. The engraving is fairly subtle but clean in appearance. Additionally, the inside of polyurethane Smart Covers can be engraved. We can engrave photographs and artwork with shading on the inside of your poly cover.

Tan covers engrave to a rich brown shade, great for that natural look.

iPad Smart Covers are decorated in-house using our laser engraving machine. In this process the laser melts or removes the top surface of material. It is not printing and no color is added. There is usually some variation in the color and appearance of each cover. If you need to order a large number of covers that all look identical then this is not the decoration process to use. Debossed and printed iPad cases may be a better choice for your needs.

The current tan leather Smart Cover for iPad that Apple sells laser etches to a medium brown color. It is possible there will be some variation in the color of the etching due to the fact that this is genuine leather and due to other manufacturing changes that are out of our control. The darkness of the engraving may vary from one cover to another and from one order to the next. Large filled areas may not engrave to an exactly uniform color.

Artwork on leather smart covers can be almost any kind of graphic as long as the resolution is high enough. Logos with shading come out quite well, as do high contrast photos and illustrations. Some detail, especially in photos, may be lost due to the texture of the leather and the fact that we cannot engrave very deeply on these thin covers.

Laser engraving leather leaves behind an ash residue. We clean each cover after engraving, but there may still be traces of this residue left behind that will create a dark-colored cloud around the engraved area when handled. Apple has also noted that “the leather Smart Cover is crafted from high-quality, naturally treated material that gets its color from a rich aniline dye. Some color may rub off during use.”

If you are placing a large order we very strongly recommend doing one cover as a sample, receiving it in person, and adjusting your artwork as needed. This process generally takes about two weeks, but quick turnaround orders are possible by taking advantage of our rush service options. We do not recommend ordering a large number of covers without an in-person proof. Returns or refunds are not possible for custom items.

From logos to photos, the red covers really stand out.

iPad Smart Covers are decorated in-house using our laser engraving machine. In this process the laser melts or removes the top surface of material. It is not printing and no color is added. There is usually some variation in the color and appearance of each cover. If you need to order a large number of covers that all look identical then this is not the decoration process to use. Debossed and printed iPad cases may be a better choice for your needs.

The current red leather Smart Cover for iPad that Apple sells laser etches to a dark brown color. It is possible there will be some variation in the color of the etching due to the fact that this is genuine leather and due to other manufacturing changes that are out of our control. To date, we have not seen this with the red covers, but it is always a possibility. Variation occurs at random and we do not have a way to test the outcome before engraving each cover.
